Design Process - Arnold Residence

Wellfleet, Massachusetts

The Arnold Residence is a family homestead and retreat that has been the location of summer reunions for decades. During those warm months, the house is bustling with activity with friends and family visiting the coast. In contrast, during the harsh and cold Cape Cod winter, the home becomes a peaceful retreat for two.

The original structure dates to the early 1700's and included a mid century addition. As part of the renovation and addition, the family wished to make this house more energy efficient. Design decisions were then made to create an environmentally conscious studio addition. With this approach, the existing structure will remain a true summer home for the whole family to enjoy. The new addition will create an environmentally friendly space to be enjoyed in the winter that captures serene views and capitalizes on passive solor energy.
