Spring House Hotel Renovation

Block Island, Rhode Island

The spring house, an historic hotel on Block Island, is an enduring icon of the island's guilded age. Through detailed coordination with both the local historic district, building inspection and standards department, and the state Historic Preservation and Heritage Commission (RIHPHC), a restoration scope and implementation plan was developed and approved. Implementation focused on the salvage and stabilization of existing materials where possible and updates were made to make the building more current.

Exposed sanitary plumbing lines detract from the historic character of the grand front veranda. Restrictions existed that did not allow for the relocation of these lines so the design incorporated ways to re-route these exposed lines into vertical chases trimmed to match the porch columns. This helped minimize their visual impact and insultates operational noise for guests while they enjoy the veranda.
